HIGH COUNTRY CAS

Watauga County MADD

Mothers Against Drunk Driving is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with approximately 2 million members and supporters nationwide. MADD was founded in 1980 and continues to grow 2 years later.

We are dads and daughters, sons and uncles, friends and neighbors. And mothers. We're all ages and from all walks of life. We are committed to our mission to stop drunk driving, support victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking. We need more people like you to continue to make a difference.

The Watauga County MADD CAS was formed in late 2006 with a gathering of concerned citizens and law enforcement with Ian Wang, of Appalachian State University, as facilitator. Craig Lloyd, the North Carolina chapter executive director, attended the meeting, spoke about national statistics of drunk driving including the number killed and injured, and the consequences of that behavior. Craig also showed videos prepared by the national organization, which were aimed at different interests of those concerned about drunk driving and its consequences. Those attending had several concerns they hoped a local MADD group could address, primarily the high number of continuances of drunk driving cases in the Watauga County court system and the need for a Victims Assistance volunteers to assist those who are victims of a drunk driver.

Subsequent to this organizational meeting, a group of volunteers formed for Court Monitoring and another volunteer, Jeni Wyatt, who holds a doctorate in counseling, attended the Victim's Assistance training course at the headquarters of MADD in Dallas, TX. All volunteers have become active in local events and festivals in order to spread the word about the consequences of drunk driving and all support local DWI checkpoints by law enforcement by providing refreshments and tallying statistics for later dissemination to the media and this Web Page. The local MADD volunteers have also partnered with many local groups who address the problem of drunk driving and underage drinking including a chapter of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) at Watauga High School and PARC, a local group addressing underage drinking.
